postheadericon All You Have To Understand About Upper Back Pain

Although upper back pain is not a disorder that happens often, it does cause intense pain and also a huge amount of discomfort when it occurs. The lower back is different in form and function to the thoracic spine or upper back. The lower back and the neck are supposed to provide flexibility whilst the upper region of the back is supposed to be stable and strong to allow an individual to be able to stand upright.

The upper spine has twelve vertebrae that are situated in the center of the spine. Each one of these is joined to a rib on each side and those are joined to the breastbone. Because the ribs are linked to the spine and the sternum in the front, it does not allow for too much movement in the spine.

Pain in the upper back can be caused by sudden trauma or injury. It can also be caused by poor posture. Those who work on computers most of their day will almost certainly suffer with back pain. This back pain which is caused by strain will normally be accompanied by neck or shoulder pain or in some instances, by both.

Joint dysfunction or muscular irritation will be the cause of the majority of back pain cases. Pain in the upper area of the back is commonly linked to a strain or a sprain. This can be caused by lifting heavy objects or by repetitive action. Straining of the muscles will cause the muscle to over-stretch and this will result in rips in the tissue of the muscle. The symptoms are much the same for a sprain. However, in this instance the ligaments will be affected rather than the muscles.

Passive physical therapy is normally a very effective method of treatment where there is muscle strain or sprain. Massage therapy and acupuncture will also prove to be very effective. Strengthening as well as stretching exercises will also help to alleviate pain. Injecting a local anesthetic can prove effective if the area where the pain is most concentrated can be pinpointed.

A ruptured disc can also cause pain in the upper regions of the back. There is a disc of cartilage between each vertebra which helps to cushion and absorb any shock when there is movement. The wear and tear that occurs over time will cause the discs to become hard and they will lose their elasticity. A ruptured disc occurs when this disc starts bulging from the spinal column. When pressure from this disc is placed on the tissue and nerves in the spinal column, it will cause pain.

More serious medical conditions, like osteoporosis, can also cause back pain. Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes muscle stiffness as well as muscle pain. This condition can cause connective tissue in the back to become inflamed. Spinal stenosis is a condition that results in tissue and nerve pinching in the spinal column and this will cause back pain. Spinal stenosis is normally more prominent in those who are over 50 years old.

You will find many other reasons for upper back pain. It is suggested that you seek treatment for this before it progresses to a more severe and serious condition.
